Grading

1/6 of the final grade will be based on homework (problem sets here), 1/6 will be based on the first midterm and 1/4 on the second, and 5/12 will be based on the final. Some fraction (half) of the points lost on the midterm can be made up on the final. So if your homework, midterm, and final grades are \(h,m_1,m_2,e\) out of \(100, 100, 100, 200\) respectively, then the final raw grade out of \(100\) will be

\[ \frac{1}{24} \left( 4h + 4m_1 + 6 m_3 + 5f \cdot \left(1 + \frac{500-2m_1-3m_2}{1000}\right) \right).\]

So for example if you get full marks on both midterms, your final is 41.66% of the grade, but if you get \(0\) on both midterms, you final is 62.5% of your final raw score.
