This blog is intended to be a supplement to Math 16100 at the University of Chicago for Fall of 2025 as taught by Frank Calegari.
Comments will be moderated and unless there is a good reason otherwise will be restricted to students enrolled in my sections of 16100.
The main text for the course is Spivak’s Calculus. If you can’t get hold of a copy, I believe there are plenty of pdfs easily available online. One possibility is to use one of those and then purchase the book at a later date.
Often mathematical arguments are “short” in that they only take up one or two pages. Don’t make the mistake that this means they are quick to read! One page might represent at least an hour’s work to understand. Similarly with the blog posts. They are not to skim, but to contemplate. I try to include some worked examples, but it is essential that you try to do the same computation yourself. Even better, you should try to modify the examples and see that you can do similar computations.
Class will be held 10:30-11:20 and 11:30-12:20 MWF Ryerson Annex 177.
Homework: There will weekly homework for this course. I have prepared eight homework sets, which will eventually be available here. I strongly recommend that you do these problems to help learn the material.
Midterms and Exams: There will be two midterms (Oct 10 and Nov TBD) and on final.
Grading: On the generous side. I’m aiming to teach you something you find interesting.
